Hazel & the CSL crew

Polygon reVue, with the aid of Starfeeder, proudly presents an interview Mona ‘Hazelynut’ Zhang - one of the rising voices in the foreign Starcraft-scene. Not only is she the silver medalist of the SC2GG Commentator Idol, but more importantly she is also one of the brains behind the very promising Collegiate Starleague - where college students battle for fame and glory in the finest strategy experience since chess. Without further ado, this is Hazel’s view upon what Starcraft is today, and where it’s heading:

1) Would You mind telling us a little about who You are, where You come from and how it is to study at Princeton?

Hello everyone. I’m currently an undergraduate at Princeton University with no inkling of a prospective major, and I happen to love StarCraft. I grew up in the United States under the influence of an older brother who loved RTS games and MMORPGs–so instead of playing with dolls, I grew up microing mutalisks (badly).

Commentator Idol was pretty cool :) She was one of my favs, we need more female faces in the new growing SC/SC2 community.

Personally, I hate the Simon Cowell-spawned shows with a vengeance, but, in this case, I loved what Cholera and the sc2gg-staff had done with the concept. Granted, commentating Starcraft games is not that similar to singing meek pop songs, and the format needs some tweaking before season 2 - but even so it was great fun.

More importantly, it did introduce new talent to the foreing Starcraft-scene. It gave huge publicity to Hazel and CSL-movement, and the winner - KennyCasting - is now hosting his own webbased and Starcraft-centred radio show. It's nice when regular pop culture can be adapted to fit a niche topic such as supreme eSports, and that's why I'm looking forward to more.

And yes, a balanced gendermix is the best way to create a sound athmosphere anywhere, and since eSports is an activity where people could compete equally regardless of anatomy there really is nothing stopping this phenomenon from being all-inclusive - apart from deeply ingrained attitutedes, that is. Which is why I'm happly to publish this interview, whilst also enjoying the fact that Mona 'Hazelynut' Zhang has got a very nice voice :)
