Rob Pardo put up a powerpoint slide showcasing 3 possible routes to go when focusing on the single-player campaign...
a) simple like the originals
b) full-out, more cinematics, more everything
c) a mixture
The crowd hardly made a peep with choice a) or c) but there was an enormous cheer with option b) of course. I personally did not think Blizzard would do it, but they are! So the only way to do that was to split up the single player campaign into 3 different story arcs. Don't worry the game still only has one ending
Jim Raynor is the star of course for the Terran game, Kerrigan leads the Zerg in the 2nd of the trilogy and Zeratul the hero for the Protoss in the finale. Of course no word yet on pricing ($50-60 or $20-$30) or timing of releases, we're still way out.
What would be interesting to see is if they release each story faster then Valve does with their episodes. Personally I think this is a good move, both for the fans as well as Blizzard's business model.
Check out my photos below, plus a preview of a cinematic in the final story arc where Zeratul comes face to face with Kerrigan and Kerrigan's dream sequence animated mockup.

I am not happy at all with this design change. I made a detailed argument over in Slapnuts article. But the TLDR of it is that this is a very inconsiderate move on Blizzards part, and seems to be nothing more than a way to make more money, despite what they say about "more for the fans."

in all seriousness, i probably wont get the Zerg and Protoss campaigns. I dont play SC for the single player part of it. I am all about the multiplayer, and the multiplayer is going to be completely unchanged from each episode of the trilogy.

not true. bliz stated that each version would add features to the multiplayer. so in all likelyhood if you only buy one of the 3 versions, you will only be able to play against those that choose to run with just that version (kinda like the SC vs BW setup)

actually, that isnt true, they very clearly stated that they were seperating the multiplayer and the single player. there will be many units in the single player that are not accessable in the multiplayer. All though they may add components like making the next parts of the trilogy actually expansion packs for the multiplayer, then we may be forced to buy the next parts

I'll wait for the prices before I make judgment. It might not turn out to be as bad as it sounds if the pricing is right, looking forward to the extra content at the moment

The campaign map is huge, but so are the campaign maps in Rise of Legends. But how many of those missions consist of easy breezy tutorials with a few triggers inside that require you to march your units from one waypoint to another? I'm betting that at least five of those missions will be to familiarize the player and not actually consist of proper 'storyline', but I'd love to see them prove me wrong.
One thing that does give me hope is the fact that the single player campaign, though relatively linear, still has branching opportunities that allow you to pick and choose your upgrade path throughout the game. That spells replayability, but it remains to be seen whether it has any depth to it. Battle Realms had similar replayability, but in the long run, the choices you made didn't matter all that much despite the fact that you got different units.
I'd like to see each campaign lasting as long as Warcraft 3: TFT did in its entirety, with difficult missions and interesting plotlines. I'd be disappointed if it all played out like the Human campaign in the original Warcraft 3.
In any case, the announcement comes as a major shock. It may be possible that Starcraft II was originally conceived as a gigantic campaign, but that they're only doing this now because their development of Starcraft II single player campaign (in its totality) is very behind schedule, and so they need to release the game by completing their work on the Terran campaign and brushing up on the multiplayer, which doesn't need anything more than polish and some balancing at this point. I just hope that's not the case and that the campaign really is as big as it seems on the map.
That said, I'm still buying all of them.

I'm trying to wrap my mind around this, and bit by bit, I'm coming to accept that having a 25-30 mission campaign for each faction, with separate campaign/gameplay mechanisms in three self-contained products is actually the best way to go about it.
It's preferable to splitting a 90 mission game into 3 products, spaced out over 3 years with 10 missions per faction in each product. That would suck because it'd simply result in cliffhangers and people wouldn't be able to experience enough with each of the game's unique campaign functions.
The Terran campaign follows Jim Raynor, who's a mercenary that buys upgrades for his army, and travels to various planets to earn allies and money. The Zerg campaign plays out like an RPG, where the Zerg (and Kerrigan) evolve as you progress. The Protoss campaign revolves around diplomacy and some other nebulous concepts. Having only 10 missions of each would kind of stink, especially when you want to keep a momentum.
What's really promising is that Rob Pardo stated that there will be no cliffhanger endings, and that each game will have a complete, self-contained storyline. That's good.
Likewise, I'm going to postpone my gamer outrage to see all of this play out.

Blizz Devs said they would not create cliffhangers, they will treat each episode like a full complete story-line

I actually like this, I was sitting up close when they annouced it and was all tingly feeling inside
I love single-player more so this means more to look forward too imho.

I'm all on board for this as well, and that showy fight scene had me looking like a mouth breather with anticipation. Holy crap... that was just amazing. Kerrigan looks odd to me, but whatever since Raynor looks odd 2 without a military shave.
I'm honestly happy to bits that they're releasing 3 different games but sad as well since it'll be years before we get the whole story. Also i'm frustrated that the Zerg come second but i have to agree the Terrans deserve the first slot.
What i want is to learn of the Duran storyline... a decade past and i havent lost interest in that whole story arc... i need me some closure.
