Blizzard can't register StarCraft: Ghost as an e-Sports brand in China
English Translation:
The Trademark review and adjudication board dismissed Blizzard’s appeal based on grounds that the name spreads “feudal superstition”. They translated StarCraft Ghost to mean “Astrology” and “Ghost”. Thus the judges of the Beijing Municipal people’s court were asked to not allow Blizzard to register the trademark.
Blizzard Entertainment developed StarCraft in 1998; which would go on to become the worlds first professional E-Sport.
The Jury considered that trademarks, apart from merchandise, should not carry anything that might have a negative impact on the culture. The Chinese direct translation; "Astrology Ghost" fit their description of a negative impact and may cause feudal superstition, unfortunately for Blizzard this is both a negative from a business aspect as well as the type of story that tips their hand to their future plans for a new IP.
I translated the above from the Chinese law site
ChineseCourt.org: Chinese Source
To fight for the name of a supposedly canceled game this hard should tell us something about Blizz's future plans (and Nova's)...
Also it was again mentioned recently by Blizzard, their intentions on continuing work on an unannounced next gen MMO. Remember Blizzard has said that they are working on 2 unannounced new games. Looks more and more like that StarCraft MMO game may be a reality after all?

I'll try not to strangle Apolaustic for what he said about Ghost...As for StarCraft: Ghost the MMO...RPG...I would say no. Maybe a Online FPS for platforms and PC. All I know is that Peter Lee one of the HUGE environment design guys that's worked on WoW is now on "Team 4" the new team of all stars designing whatever the hell it is. I would love to see something new or just a complete overhaul of StarCraft: Ghost. I played it at BlizzCon and it could have kicked the crap out of most of the FPS' on the market to date if it had gone to completion.

My best guess would be they go in the direction of the game "Planetside" and form some sort of hybrid shooter/MMO. IF and I mean IF Huxley is anywhere decent when they finnaly decide to release it Starcraft: Ghost will have to compete with it.

ok going back to what i said before...i actually meant mmorpg. sorry for the confusion.
but isnt it almost a given that it would be an mmorpg? its the by far easiest way blizzard has ever made money.
it would be kinda cool to have first-person starcraft, but to what cost?
and any starcraft based game would almost certainly want to be class-based.
lastly:didnt some really high person at blizzard just quit to make his own game? i wish i could remember who it was...

Blizz could make a Ghost game that isn't class based, the only requirement of an MMO is that servers allow for thousands of players to be able to interact with each other.

I didn't really understand the comic at the end but interesting piece, so basically Starcraft Ghost was going to be created into an MMORPG (based on the fact that the request was denied based on China's fear of feudal superstition (read: mass mysticism).
China has tried to control religion and prevent it because it makes the people more likely to rebel and less under their control and leads to extremism and all sorts of things that could throw a cog into their Facist war machine.
I thought Starcraft Ghost already came out? I'm not a big console gamer, prefer pc and mobile gaming so this is news to me.

It was never officially canceled by Blizzard, they just put it on 'indefinite hold'

I've always had hope for Starcraft: Ghost. I used to sit around with the other guys on GameFAQs just speculating different things, even after it was "indefinitely on hold." MMO or not, just hearing that Blizzard is still fighting for its namesake gives me some hope for the game.
