StarCraft II will not support multiplayer play over a local area network.
Sounds like you will have to go through battle.net to be able to have a game with the person sitting next to you.
Doesn't sound too good for universities/colleges that don't like Battle.net.

1. they'll put it back soon
2. they renamed LAN into something else but has the same functionality (lol marketing)
3. what we feared the most. no lan whatsoever
but hey THERE"S NO COW LEVEL right? THERE"S NO LAN might just be a new cheatcode for SC2

We don't currently plan to support LAN play with StarCraft II, as we are building
Battle.net to be the ideal destination for multiplayer gaming with StarCraft II
and future Blizzard Entertainment games. While this was a difficult decision for
us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded
Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer
experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy. es.

Good batch of info from the trenches of Starcraft 2 - kudos to every geek who made it there and back despite NDAs and dubious news on LAN-options. GG! ;D
