I can't say I like the change that much, and Lipton getting his own GR section is kind of overpowered, imo.
I guess we will have to see how things work out.

I think there should be a general.
I mean, what if you wanted to blog about AoC? Or just MMOs in general? Should you put your post under all those tags? Or just WoW or something? It just adds more clutter.

As BTY's manager, I've adviced him to leave GR and stop posting the quality content he has been unless he gets his own portal like Lipton.
A rage portal or a AoC portal is acceptable.

Yeah, I really don't like this. From what I understand, it's going to be like (just an example) Call of Duty Portal, and then a StarCraft portal, right? Well.. in the old way I could go to Gameriot wanting to read on StarCraft but what if an interesting COD blog caught my attention? With this new way I won't be able to ever see that sort of thing unless I go out of my way.. is that how this site is going to work now? =/

Nope, that's not how it's going to work. Think of Gameriot as a video game engine which then gets licensed out by individual developers when making their game, like Gears of War did with the Unreal engine. Gameriot offers blogging software, video, forums, files, admin functionality, metrics, yada yada yada - so the goal here is finding already established sites and helping them improve and grow by using the Gameriot platform.
This isn't Gameriot: Starcraft 2. This is Starfeeder.

I'm not a big fan of these changes tbh and now Lipton has a huge advantage in the blogging contest too! :P

I've requested that I be removed from the Blogging contest, which should open up another spot for an up and coming blogger

wouldnt Liption lose views in this new scenario? how many people are going to switch categories to read the StarCraft stuff by itself? as opposed to it being included with everything everyones looking at, and the title catching some people who were looking at the other various blogs.
i mean the onlly ones who would purposely view Liptons stuff now are his readers which he already had, and someone randomly interested in a 20 yr old game. but he loses the masses that might read it based on viewing various other blogs...

Gonna have to agree here, I'm fine w/ the WoW portal, but the SC2 one is really just Lipton, I'd be fine if we had you know 3-4 writers like in WoW(ming, jasi, roma, vir(BARELY), zilea, etc.), but you might as well just link the portal right to his blog.
Plus I think you should have prolonged this until the absorption of other sites to provide a wider array of games, right now people might come and see WoW and SC2, say "thats it?" and go away.

First, props to Lipton. He's basically the most hardcore blogger/starcraftjunkie/web2.0 junkie that I've come across online. He's built a great brand with Starfeeder, so I'm glad to see him get some respect for it.
That said, the change in general is a poor one. I run a broad-based game video site focusing on all aspects of the game community. I came to GameRiot to syndicate our news posts (and videos soon) that cover the whole range of gaming, from Ninja Gaiden II to spoofs on gaming culture in general. Now at Gameriot, there is no outlet for these posts - as 90% of them will not fall under Wow or SCII.
We actually came across this as a design decision for Pwnology. The original plan was to limit our game videos to Starcraft, CS and Wow so that users could only share videos on these topics. We came to the realization that limiting ourselves artificially drastically reduced our target market. Game preferences are as diverse as each of us, so why would we exclude the diehard Mario fans over zerglings? It simply didn't make any sense.
So we would have been splicing our market to a very small portion.
So all in all, while I wish GameRiot the best, I believe it is a rather poor marketing and customer move and I don't see the site nearly as valuable as it once was.

The other content will still be there, and your same audience is still under the WoW portal. In essence it is to help bring lipton's starfeeder site into a new design.
The gameriot blog, Kyle and I's random console/pc news and blogs will still be here, etc.
In reality you should think of WoWriot as Gameriot.com, and Starfeeder.gameriot as lipton's old starfeeder site.

Why is it called "WoWRiot" if it's basically Gameriot? I'm not flaming or anything.. just wondering the logic behind it.

If I had to guess, because much of the content is WoW based, and because of World of Ming. Nothing is really changing content wise on the Staff end, it is just now Liptons stuff will be on another portal.

Gameriot grew out of an avid and rambunctious WoW community, and so when starting out with the platform-style portal system, it made sense to name it what it should've been named all along, haha.
I'm not opposed to the notion of a "general gaming" website that could be called Gameriot, but as of right now, WoWriot and Starfeeder should be considered websites unto themselves.

it may seem stupid but IMO changing the name of WoWRiot back to Gameriot or even WoWRandomRiot, or TrollRiot, anything but WoWRiot would go a long way in visitors being comfortable with it being more than only WoW. I sure as hell dont want to read only WoW crap now, then again idc about the Starcraft crap until SC2 comes out, but it feels like WoWriot is pigeonholing my creativity!!!!11

In response to all of these comments... thanks... I'll keep posting to the wow/general forums. I do think it adds a degree of confusion and per "TehJerk's" comments I do believe a "view all" portal would be preferred by many (
"Troll Riot" btw).
Perhaps in the future development of GR you could add a "subscription feed" whereby users could create their own front page and subscribe to portal news of their interest. This would be another way to create a "general" portal while keeping your trolls seperate.

I would recommend you continue posting your news to the WoWriot portal
It's essentially the same old site your'e used to, just with a different name. General news will still be tolerated in all portals! We're just segmenting the communities so more can grow.
Think of it like a Forum. My favorite is SomethingAwful.com. They have a 'Games' forum and within it an 'MMO' forum and a 'Cars' forum, but you see posts about politics in both.

After some thinking I've realized this change isn't so bad, but rather confusing in the intentions the GR staff had.
Most of the stuff on GR is/was wow related, and the community was basically built of wow from day 1. Yes, there was starfeeder and other non wow stuff, but wow was still the big thing. It seems to me that the GR staff wanted this community to continue, and for others like it to be made. So the portal is called wowriot, although I don't believe the staff wants only wow related stuff. They aren't separating the content, they are separating the community. Right?
I guess its not a huge deal, but it's confusing at the very least. Although really, starfeeder, while nice to read to get sc2 stuff, wasn't exactly a part of the rest of GR. So now it's not, so that makes sense, sorta...
It'll be interesting to see if other community do foster as a result of this.

The site isn't changing terbo. The same people will still be here, the same content. I am still writing about other console and pc games, kyle as well, and I am sure other users will as well.
If there is enough demand, and content, it could be possible down the road to have a general gaming portal, or something of the sorts.
=p

Well I think you will turn away potential new comers if they think the site is only for WoW or SC players. I know if it was set up this way when I first came here I would of probably left and never returned. I have very little interest in WoW and SC but I do like everything else about this site.
A blog explaining why World of Warcraft is terrible.
